Sports Union Homepage

The Sports Union boasts the biggest membership base in the Student Union with 1300 members. We currently have 37 sports clubs and offer a mix of competitive sports and recreational opportunities. We are located at the Collegiate Crescent Campus (http://www.shu.ac.uk/visit/plancollegiate.html) and we work in close partnership with the University’s Sport and Recreation Service as ‘Sport Hallam’ (http://www.shu.ac.uk/sporthallam). Sport Hallam aims to provide a range of services to students which can be accessed by becoming a Sport Hallam member. The main sports facilities are currently being developed in the Pearson Building and are scheduled to re-open at the end of October 2008. Once open the facility will provide a unique Strength and Conditioning Service, and a brand new extended fitness suite open to all Sport Hallam members.

The Sports Union membership is represented by the Sports Executive and is supported by 3 dedicated full time members of staff. By becoming a Sport Hallam member and joining a Sports Union Club you get the chance to meet new people and form long lasting friendships in as many clubs as you like. You have the opportunity to travel around the country on many of the club trips and you can try out sports and activities you’ve never tried before, and it’s all included as part of your Sport Hallam membership.

A lot of the clubs have teams in the British Universities and Colleges Sports competition programme (BUCS - www.bucs.org.uk). Sheffield Hallam has boasted a top 20 ranking for the past 5 seasons out of approximately 150 other member institutions and this shows the calibre of our teams and the support they receive from Sport Hallam. Some clubs have links with professional clubs in the Sheffield area such as Sheffield Hallam Hockey Club (Mens and Womens Hockey), Sheffield Eagles (Rugby League), Sheffield Arrows (Mens Basketball), Sheffield Hatters (Womens Basketball), and Rotherham Titans (Mens Rugby Union).

Sheffield is famous for it’s outdoor sports and the Sports Union has several clubs with opportunities to access the City’s great natural facilities. These include Climbing, Fell Walking and Mountaineering, and Cycling amongst other outdoor and water sports clubs.

There are two long standing annual events in the Sports Union calendar; Varsity (the annual competition between Sheffield University and Hallam) and the Annual Sports Ball and Awards Dinner. Click on the links for more details.
